MOXIBUSTION

Moxibustion, often simply called “moxa”, has been practiced for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. Moxibustion involves the burning of dried plant materials (Artemisia vulgaris), commonly known as “moxa”, on or near the surface of the skin to promote healing.

Moxibustion Treatments

01

Improved Blood Circulation: Warming the skin and underlying tissues with moxa is believed to enhance blood flow, which can aid in healing and reduce pain.

02

Pain Relief: Moxibustion is often used to address pain, particularly for conditions like arthritis and menstrual cramps. Some studies suggest it can help reduce pain, although more research is needed.

03

Turning Breech Babies: One of the more researched applications of moxibustion is its use in helping to turn breech babies (where the baby’s head is not positioned down) in late pregnancy. Some studies suggest that applying moxibustion to specific acupuncture points on the mother’s foot can encourage the baby to turn.

04

Digestive Aid: Moxa can be used to treat some digestive disorders. Practitioners believe it can stimulate digestion and address issues like diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain.

05

Immune System Boost: There’s a belief that moxibustion can strengthen the immune system by increasing the production of white blood cells.

06

Relief from Cold and Dampness: In traditional Chinese medicine, many ailments are attributed to the presence of “cold” or “dampness” in the body. Moxa, with its warming properties, is said to counteract these conditions.

07

Reduction of Fatigue and Boosting Energy: Some people use moxibustion as a means to rejuvenate energy, especially when dealing with chronic fatigue or general tiredness.

08

Menstrual Issues: Beyond relieving menstrual cramps, moxibustion is also sometimes used to address irregular menstruation and other related issues.

09

Enhancement of Acupuncture: Moxibustion is often used in conjunction with acupuncture to enhance the effects of the treatment. The combination is believed to be synergistic.
